Fall at Orange Beach: Warm Water, Thin Crowds, Lower Rates

Quick answer: Yes, it's still swimming weather. Gulf water in October averages in the low-to-mid 70s, and afternoon highs average about 81°F. The beach empties out once school is back in session, which is why fall is one of the best-kept secrets on this coast.
Why fall works
Summer here means packed parking lots, long restaurant waits, and beach chairs shoulder to shoulder. By late September that pressure is gone. Kids are back in school, the crowds thin out, and nightly rental rates typically drop from peak summer pricing, while the water is still warm.
The trade-off is hurricane season. It runs through November 30, and the historical peak of Atlantic activity falls in September and October. Check the forecast before you travel, and know our cancellation policy before you book.
Fall weather by the numbers
Here are the long-term averages for the three fall months:
Month | Avg. high | Avg. low | Gulf water | Rainfall |
September | 89°F | 72°F | 80–82°F | 6.6 in |
October | 81°F | 62°F | 72–74°F | 4.7 in |
November | 72°F | 51°F | 62–65°F | 4.4 in |
Air temperature and rainfall: NOAA 1991–2020 climate normals, Pensacola International Airport, the nearest long-term weather station. Gulf water: NOAA Coastal Water Temperature Guide averages for Dauphin Island, AL and Pensacola, FL, which sit on either side of Orange Beach.
October is the sweet spot. Highs are around 80°F, nights are cool enough for the balcony, it's the driest of the three months, and the water is still in the 70s. September is warmer in and out of the water, but it's also the rainiest month and the peak of hurricane season. By November the water is in the 60s, which is cool enough that most people stop swimming, but the beaches are at their quietest.
What's open and worth doing
• The beach and the Gulf. The water stays swim-friendly into October before cooling off in November.
• National Shrimp Festival, Typically during the second week in October. It's on the Gulf Shores public beach at Hwy 59 and East Beach Blvd. Expect four days of Gulf seafood, live music on two stages, and arts and crafts vendors. Admission is free. Hours are 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. Parking near the site fills fast, so use the festival shuttle.
• Fishing charters and dolphin cruises. Fall is a popular season for fishing. The easiest place to find a charter is Zeke's Landing & Marina at 26619 Perdido Beach Blvd in Orange Beach, where you can walk the docks and compare boats. Dolphin cruises leave from there too, and they're a good choice if you'd rather watch the water than fish it. Ask us if you'd like a recommendation.
• Everything on our [Eat], [Shop], and [Play] pages. It's all still open, with shorter waits than in July.
Who fall is for
If you want quiet beaches and don't need peak-season crowds, this is your season. If you want the Hangout Music Festival scene or every restaurant at full swing, plan for late spring or summer instead.
How Pam and I spend fall here
Fall is our favorite season at the beach, and here's how we spend it.
Sunsets from the balcony. Our condos are beachfront, and fall evenings on the balcony are hard to beat. After the September equinox the sun sets a little farther south each evening, so it goes down over the Gulf instead of behind the buildings to the west.
Finding new places to eat. We use the quieter months to try restaurants we haven't been to yet. Our most recent find is Sunliner Diner, a 1950s-style diner serving breakfast and all-day comfort food. The places we like end up on our Eat page, so every recommendation there is somewhere we've eaten ourselves.
Getting the condos ready. Fall is also when we refresh the bedding and restock the kitchens, replacing anything that has gone missing over the summer, so each condo is ready for peak season.
Beachcoming on an empty beach. One of our favorite past-times is walking the beach looking for shells. With the summer crowds gone, you can walk a long way without seeing anyone, and you have a better chance of finding shells before someone else does.
